I have always loved history. So for me personally when I travel I like to know the history of the place I have the privilege of visiting. I believe it is important to understand the past, so you can be respectful of sights you are seeing and what they mean to the people who live there.
When I planned this leg of our trip I really wanted to gain an understanding of what happened here. I remember watching clips in the news of the war, but had no idea why this occurred. Today I organised a private walking tour for us all with a local Bosnian. We spent 2 hours listening to Adi explain the history of Bosnia through 5 eras. He spoke to us about how the war impacted his life, his country and what the current situation is like here. He was extremely knowledgeable and incredibly interesting to listen to.
I won’t give you a history lesson but I will say that the current situation here sounds very delicate and segregated. There are 3 presidents for each of the 3 major groups living here. They also have different schooling systems, different sports clubs. Adi spoke about wanting to live in a place where unity exists. This statement made me think a lot about if such a place exists!

On a less serious note and to complete our daily recount, after our tour we shopped at the local markets, watched a person jump from the famous ‘old bridge’ and then we spent a few hours chilling out at the pool at our accommodation.
That was really interesting. I remember seeing about the war over there & seeing the destruction it caused. Interesting to hear about it & see the results in those buildings.
ReplyDeleteWow Donna that's so interesting! I remember all that war stuff & watching TV in disbelief at the destruction of people & buildings. So interesting to see your photos & some of the surviving buildings. Very sobering.
ReplyDeleteThis is one part of your trip I can’t wait to hear about in more detail. Also how about those flowers in the window boxes 🌸 💜🩷
